Dr. Sarat Chandarlapaty is a Professor of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering with appointments as a Laboratory Head in the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program and Member on the Breast Medicine Service. He holds the Naddisy Foundation Endowed Chair in Breast Cancer Research. Dr. Chandarlapaty’s research has been focused on understanding the mechanisms by which breast cancers develop resistance to targeted therapy and designing novel strategies to overcome resistance. These works were foundational to the clinical development of liquid biopsies to detect ESR1 mutations in metastatic breast cancer as well as use of oral SERDs to target ER mutant breast cancers. His more recent work has defined key mechanisms of resistance to cdk4/6 inhibitors, PI3K inhibitors, and anti-HER2 therapies. His ongoing work is to develop tools and strategies to identify drug resistance earlier, and more comprehensively to generate durable treatments for patients with metastatic disease.
